Tanto, an Army reservist, was arrested in Masbate last week
for the death of cyclist Mark Vincent Garalde
Chief Inspector Jonathan Videz, Aritao town police chief said Tanto gave his gun -- a Norinco High Capacity cal .45 pistol -- to his brother-in-law Jonathan Leano in Barangay Kirang in Aritao town the day after the murder.

Tanto had been caught on CCTV arguing and fighting with cyclist Mark Vincent Garalde on a street in Quiapo, Manila last week. Video footage also showed him getting a gun from his car and shooting Garalde repeatedly.  An 18-year-old bystander, Rocel Bondoc, was also hit by a stray bullet from the shooting.

"He did not know that the gun was used in the murder. We were informed by Western Police District (Manila Police District) after Tanto’s arrest in Masbate that his brother-in-law is in possession of his gun after handing it over to him," he said.

Videz said Leano has not returned home after turning the gun over to police. The gun has already been brought to Manila for further investigation, he said.

He said the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division (FED) had cancelled Tanto's gun license after he failed to renew his permit.
